How to Use a Soap Calculator

Complete guide to SoapMetrics from top to bottom

    Back to Calculator
    SoapMetrics Help Center

Build, analyze, and document soap recipes with confidence

This guide walks through the calculator and the Premium workspace around it—from batch size and lye settings through oils, analysis, Ask SoapMetrics, batches, inventory, exports, and safety—so you know what each control does. For the broader product category, see soap making software.

    Lye Safety Warning

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) are highly caustic. Always wear splash-resistant eye protection, chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing, and work in a ventilated area. Keep children and pets away. Verify every recipe, unit, lye type, and measurement before making soap. Never add water to dry lye.

    Getting Started

What SoapMetrics does and what to verify first.

SoapMetrics helps you formulate, analyze, scale, and document handmade soap recipes. As you build a recipe, calculations update to show lye and water requirements, batch totals, soap quality metrics, fatty acid composition, warnings, and export options.

    Formulate

Set process, lye, water, oils, fragrance, and additives.

    Analyze

Review quality metrics, fatty acids, pH estimates (formulation aids, not lab measurements), warnings, coverage notes, and special ingredient notices.

    Produce & manage

    Premium
Track batches, keep completed-batch records, and manage ingredients, supplies, molds, and finished bars in Inventory.

    Calculator results are formulation aids

SAP values and ingredient properties use reference data; natural materials vary. Always confirm lye type, purity, units, and amounts before use. Investigate any warning or unexpected value.
    1

    Calculator Layout

How the main screen is organized.

The calculator has main tabs plus a recipe summary sidebar:

    Recipe header
Shows the recipe name (click to rename), Reset Form to start over, and Dashboard (Premium) to open saved recipes, Completed Batches, and Inventory.
    Soap Calculator tab
Main formulation area: settings, lye, fragrance, additives, oils, and notes—top to bottom.
    Soap Analysis tab
Advanced charts: saturation profile, iodine/INS analysis, pH estimate (not a measured cured-soap pH), fatty acid pie chart, estimate coverage captions, Special Ingredient Notifications, and formulation warnings/tips.
    Compliance Check tab
Premium ingredient and soap-style review. Select criteria such as vegan, palm-free, or fragrance-free and SoapMetrics flags conflicts in your current recipe.
    Soap Cost Calculator
Premium recipe costing, opened from the Cost Calculator tab. Oils, lye, fragrance, additives, colorants, and toppings with quantities import from the current recipe. Enter what you paid so SoapMetrics can calculate batch cost and invested cost per bar. Distilled water is excluded by default. This is separate from Inventory.
    Batch Tracking tab
Premium production management linked to the calculator recipe—lot numbers, timeline, cure progress, notes, photos, email reminders, and Add to Inventory when a batch is marked Completed Batch.
    Recipe Ingredients sidebar
Sticky summary on the right (desktop) showing calculated lye, water, oils, additives, totals, and export buttons including Start Batch from Recipe (Premium).

    3

    Calculator Settings

Unit system, process, and batch size.

    Unit System
Metric (g, kg) or Imperial (oz, lb). Controls which weight units appear throughout the calculator.
    Weight Unit
Working unit for oils and calculated amounts—grams, kilograms, ounces, or pounds.
    Soap Making Process
Cold Process (CP) — oils and lye are combined, poured into a mold, and cure over weeks.
Hot Process (HP) — soap is cooked to accelerate saponification. HP defaults to post-cook superfat method when selected.
    Scale Recipe
Total oil weight for the batch—the combined weight of base oils, fats, waxes on the Oils & Fats route, and butters only (not finished soap weight). Example: 16 oz olive + 8 oz coconut + 4 oz shea = 28 oz total oil weight. For each oil row, enter weight or percent; SoapMetrics updates the other from this total.

    Why percentage-based recipes scale easily

A recipe with 40% olive oil stays 40% whether you make a 500 g test batch or a 5 kg production batch.
    4

    Lye & Water

    Alkali, purity, liquid, and superfat.

    Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)

Primarily used for solid bar soap.

    Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)

Primarily used for liquid and paste soaps. Common grade is 90% purity.

    Lye Purity

Enter your supplier's alkali purity as a percentage—for example 100, 99, 98, 90, or a decimal such as 98.5. Changing purity adjusts only the active-alkali calculation; it does not switch between NaOH and KOH. When you change Lye Type, SoapMetrics keeps the current purity value—including intentionally entered 100% or 90%—and asks you to review that it matches the alkali you selected. Dual-lye recipes use separate NaOH and KOH purity fields.

    Water Calculation Methods

    Water as % of Oils

Liquid is calculated as a percentage of total oil weight (e.g., 33% of 33 oz oils = 10.89 oz water).

    Lye Concentration

Percentage of alkali in the combined lye-and-water solution.
    Lye ÷ (Lye + Water) × 100

    Water : Lye Ratio

Liquid relative to lye by weight. A 2:1 ratio means two parts water for every one part lye.

    Important

Only one water method is active at a time. Use the method you prefer—do not try to match all three stored values simultaneously.

    Superfat

    Lye Discount (Standard)
Reduces calculated lye so a percentage of oil remains unsaponified. Typical body soap: 3–8%.
    Post-Cook Addition (HP)
Lye is calculated on oils saponified during the cook; selected oils are added after cooking. Configure base superfat for cooking, then add post-cook superfat oil(s) with amount by % or weight.
    Effective Superfat
Displayed when using post-cook method—combines base superfat and post-cook oil addition.

Higher superfat is not automatically better

Excessive unsaponified oil can soften bars, affect lather, and reduce shelf stability.
    5

    Fragrance

    Fragrance oils and essential oils.

Click Add Fragrance to add a row. Choose Fragrance Oil (FO) or Essential Oil (EO), input method, load, and name.

    Input Method
Percentage of oils — fragrance as % of total oil weight.
Oz per lb of oils — common industry method (e.g., 0.5 oz/lb).
    Fragrance Load
The rate or amount entered according to your input method.
    Fragrance Name
Product or blend name for saved recipes and exports.

    Follow supplier limits—not generic percentages

Usage limits vary by material, supplier, and IFRA category. SoapMetrics may show cautions for high loads, but always follow the manufacturer's current documentation for the specific fragrance you use.
    6

    Additives

Clays, sodium lactate, botanicals, and more.

Use Add Additive in the Additives section for each powder, liquid, or specialty ingredient. Select the additive from the database, choose an input method (tsp, tbsp, % of oils, grams, etc.), and enter the amount.

    Why document additives

Additives affect trace, color, hardness, lather, and temperature behavior. Recording them improves repeatability and export accuracy.

    Process-aware guidance

The additive database includes usage notes for cold process and hot process. Special Ingredient Instructions and Full Recipe Instructions (Premium) use the recipe ingredients to add handling notices and place those items in the correct making steps.

    Units and input methods

Spoon-based methods (tsp, tbsp) are convenient estimates. Weighed units (g, oz, % of oils) are mass. When a row uses oz per lb of oils, remember the conversion: 1 oz/lb = 6.25% and 1.5 oz/lb = 9.375% of total oil weight—these are conversion examples, not suggested dosages.

    Carnauba wax

Carnauba is selected through Oils & Fats, not Additives. If an older recipe lists Carnauba as an additive, SoapMetrics can offer to move that weight to the wax ingredient on the oils route so lye and totals stay consistent. Total oil weight includes ingredients on that route.

    Important

Availability in the calculator does not mean every amount suits every recipe. Confirm supplier instructions for the specific material.
    7

Oils, Fats, Butters, Waxes & Acids

Build the oil portion of the formula.

Click Add Oil, search the ingredient catalog, and enter Weight or Percent for each row. Changing one updates the other based on Scale Recipe (total oil weight).

    Choose the actual ingredient grade

Some catalog entries are parent selectors—not separate measured oils. When you see Choose variant, pick the specific grade you use: for example Cherry Sweet vs Cherry Sour, Coffee Green vs Coffee Roasted, or whole coconut vs MCT fraction. A generic parent row is a selector; calculations use the variant you confirm.
    IngredientExample %
    Olive Oil40%
    Coconut Oil25%
    Shea Butter15%
    Avocado Oil15%
    Castor Oil5%
    Total100%
    Normalize Recipe
Proportionally adjusts oil percentages to total 100%. Review results before continuing.
    Total Percentage
Shown below the oil list. A percentage-based formula should total 100%.
    Ingredient data
Each catalog entry includes the properties documented for that ingredient. SAP values support lye calculations independently. Quality estimates, fatty acids, iodine, and INS use the applicable documented model for that ingredient—partial or non-applicable models do not force unavailable data to zero. Select ? or Why? beside a metric for coverage details.
    8

    Recipe Notes

Capture details the calculator fields do not cover.

Use the Recipe Notes field for batch dates, color plans, temperatures, trace behavior, mold used, cure observations, substitutions, and ideas for the next batch. Notes appear in PDF exports and premium instruction documents when saved.

    9

    Recipe Ingredients Panel

Verify calculated totals before making the batch.

The sidebar summarizes your running recipe. Review these before touching lye:

    NaOH and/or KOH required
    Water required
Each oil with weight and %
    Post-cook superfat (HP)
    Fragrance and additives
    Total batch weight
    Oil percentage total
    Effective superfat
    Lye concentration & water:lye ratio

Check this panel before making the batch

If a required amount is missing, or a value is unexpected, unusually large, or surprising, stop and review the recipe instead of proceeding. Some legitimate entries can show zero in context—a missing lye total when oils are present is different from an intentional 0% superfat.
    10

    Soap Analysis Tab

    Deeper formulation insight.

    The Soap Analysis tab includes:

    • Saturation profile (saturated vs unsaturated fats and sat:unsat ratio)
    • Advanced iodine and INS analysis with stability guidance
    • pH estimate and alkali risk assessment with testing guidance—an estimate is not a measured finished-soap pH or proof that excess alkali is absent
    • Fatty acid pie chart (HP-aware phases when applicable)
    • Soap quality bar chart with ideal-range comparison
    • Formulation warnings and tips
    • Special Ingredient Notifications when the recipe includes items that can change heat, trace, or handling

    pH estimate limitations

The pH estimate and alkali-risk notes are formulation aids based on your recipe data. They are not a laboratory measurement of cured soap pH and do not replace strip testing, supplier guidance, or your own verification before use or sale.

    Tip

Use this tab when adjusting oils to see how changes affect cleansing, conditioning, and stability.
    11

    Special Ingredient Instructions

Premium notices and handling guidance for ingredients that change how you make the batch.

    Premium
Some additives and oils do more than change the formula numbers. Salt, vinegar, honey, milk, clay, charcoal, fragrance oils, and similar items can speed trace, raise heat, clump, discolor soap, or require a different add-in order. SoapMetrics watches the recipe for those ingredients and shows notices so you can adjust your process before you start.

    Where the notices appear

    Soap Analysis banner
A yellow Special Ingredient Notifications box appears at the top of the Soap Analysis tab when one or more matching ingredients are in the recipe. Click View Alerts to continue.
    Soap Tips
Premium users are taken to Soap Tips with Analyze Recipe expanded. Ingredient alerts stay at the top, labeled as Ingredient Alerts. Use More Info for the longer explanation. These tips do not have a Fix button because they are ingredient-based, not formula-balance issues.
    Free accounts
Free users still see the yellow banner so they know special handling may apply. View Alerts opens the Get Premium modal. Full alert details, Soap Tips expansion, and step-by-step placement are Premium features.
    Estimate coverage notes
Separate from process alerts, SoapMetrics may show model-coverage information when an ingredient supports lye but not every quality estimate. Free accounts see generic guidance; Premium users can open ingredient-specific tips in Soap Tips. Basic Export PDF includes a general coverage note; Premium exports and Full Recipe Instructions can include more detail. Coverage Why? explains the estimate—it is not the same as the Premium paywall on View Alerts.

    Examples of special ingredients

    Premium
Salt and hardening additives, sugars and honey, milk or cream, beer or wine, fruit or vegetable puree, clays, activated charcoal, titanium dioxide, stearic acid, beeswax, sodium lactate, fragrance oils, vanilla/vanillin, spice essential oils, and high amounts of hard butters.

    What the instructions cover

    Premium
When to add the ingredient (for example salt last), whether to pre-disperse a powder, whether to work cooler or keep the batch warm, heat and insulation cautions, and discoloration or acceleration notes.

    Exports and Full Recipe Instructions

Free signed-in Export PDF includes a general yellow notice that special ingredients can change the process. Premium Export PDF and Full Recipe Instructions show the full alert details and place handling in the correct making steps—such as adding salt last, dispersing clay before it goes into the batter, or stirring sodium lactate into cooled lye.

These alerts do not change lye math

Special Ingredient Instructions are process guidance. They do not change SAP values, lye weight, or other calculator results. Always still confirm measurements and supplier usage rates.
    12

    Compliance Check

Premium pre-batch ingredient and label review.

    Premium
Compliance Check helps you verify that a recipe matches the standards you plan to advertise—vegan, palm-free, fragrance-free, allergen-conscious, specialty soap styles, and more. It reviews oils, additives, and fragrance entries in the calculator and flags ingredients that may conflict with your selected criteria.

Compliance Check is a formulation aid—not a certification

SoapMetrics uses ingredient-name classification and recipe structure heuristics. It cannot confirm supplier certifications, organic paperwork, RSPO documentation, or allergen declarations. Always verify each ingredient with your supplier before making, labeling, or selling soap.

    How to use Compliance Check

    1. 1Build or load a complete recipe in the calculator (oils, additives, fragrance as applicable).
    2. 2Open the Compliance Check tab.
    3. 3Use the search box to find criteria, or expand accordion groups such as Dietary & Lifestyle, Ingredient Restrictions, Fragrance & Scent, Skin Profile, Soap Style & Specialty, and Marketing & Certification.
    4. 4Check the criteria that apply to the soap you intend to make or sell.
    5. 5Review the Recipe Snapshot summary, then read each result card.
    6. 6Click status badges (Pass, Fail, Review, Verify, Info) to filter results.
    7. 7Open Details on any finding for ingredient context, amount, and criteria explanation.
    8. 8Use Analyze Ingredients for a full classified ingredient list with tags.
    9. 9Export Compliance PDF when you want a printable record for batch review or labeling prep.

    Understanding result statuses

    Pass
No conflicting ingredients were detected for this criteria based on available recipe data.
    Fail
One or more ingredients appear to conflict with the selected criteria (for example, tallow in a vegan check).
    Review
Possible concern—double-check supplier info, naming, or amount before proceeding.
    Verify
SoapMetrics cannot confirm this automatically. You must verify certification, sourcing, or supplier claims.
    Info
Informational guidance about the recipe profile (for example, castile-style or high-lather characteristics).

    Example criteria categories

    Dietary & Lifestyle

    Premium
Vegan, palm-free, tallow-free, organic, natural ingredients, cruelty-free, zero-waste, and similar lifestyle targets.

    Ingredient Restrictions

    Premium

Your checked criteria are saved in your browser so you can return to the same compliance profile across sessions.
    13

    Soap Cost Calculator

Premium recipe costing from what you actually paid.

    Premium
Soap Cost Calculator turns the current Soap Calculator recipe into an invested cost per bar. It is a pricing worksheet only—it does not change inventory quantities or pull prices from Inventory.

Recipe amounts import automatically for oils and fats (including post-cook superfat), NaOH and KOH, fragrance, additives, colorants, and toppings that have quantities. Distilled water is excluded unless you choose to include it.

How to use Soap Cost Calculator

    1. 1Build or load a complete recipe in Soap Calculator so oils, lye, fragrance, and additives have amounts.
    2. 2Open the Cost Calculator tab.
    3. 3Each listed ingredient shows Recipe uses with a blank Purchased qty, Purchase unit, and Price paid.
    4. 4Enter what you bought (for example 100 oz of olive oil for $22.99). SoapMetrics calculates the share this recipe consumed.
    5. 5Set Currency if you price in GBP, AUD, or another listed currency. Amounts stay in the currency you type—SoapMetrics does not convert exchange rates.
    6. 6Enter Actual bars produced to see invested cost per bar.
    7. 7Open Optional additional costs to add labels, wrapping, boxes, labor, or a custom cost for this batch.
    8. 8Use Remember these ingredient prices or Save Cost Snapshot if you want the same purchase details reused on later recipes.

    What counts toward cost

    Included by default

    Premium
Oils and fats, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, fragrance, additives, colorants, and toppings that have a recipe quantity.

    Excluded by default

    Premium
Distilled water. Check Include distilled water if you want remaining water on the worksheet.

    Optional extras

    Premium
Packaging, labels, shrink wrap, shipping supplies, molds, labor, utilities, or any custom batch cost you add under Optional additional costs.

    Not connected to Inventory

    Premium
Soap Cost Calculator does not deduct stock or use inventory unit prices. It only prices the ingredients in this recipe from the purchase details you enter.

Unpriced ingredients are left out of the total

The batch total only includes ingredients with purchased quantity and price paid. Remaining rows stay on the list until you fill them in, so a partial worksheet does not pretend the rest were free.
    14

    Ask SoapMetrics

    What it is good for

    Recipe-aware questions

    Premium
Trace, lather, softness, conditioning, and how oils or additives in this formula might affect the batch.

    Saved conversations

    Premium
Chats are stored on your Premium account, listed by recipe name, and stay tied to the recipe snapshot they were asked about. Search Previous chats by recipe name or words from the conversation.

    Not a lye calculator

    Premium
Ask SoapMetrics will not recompute SAP values, lye amounts, or water for you. Those stay on the calculator.

    Not a substitute for experience

    Premium
Use replies as a second look, then confirm units, purity, safety, and process yourself.

This is AI — always double-check

Ask SoapMetrics can be incomplete, imprecise, or wrong. Double-check every answer before you weigh lye, change a process, or rely on a suggestion in a real batch. Soap making uses caustic materials; you are responsible for verifying and making soap safely. Processing details are in the Privacy Policy; AI-content limits are in the Terms of Service.
    15

    Batch Tracking

Premium production management from pour to cure.

    Premium
Batch Tracking turns SoapMetrics into a mini production system. Each batch is linked to the recipe in your calculator, receives an automatic lot number, and stores a locked recipe snapshot so future recipe edits do not change historical batch records.

    Starting a batch

You can start a batch from three places:

    • The Start Batch from Recipe button on the Batch Tracking tab
    • The Start Batch from Recipe button in the Recipe Ingredients sidebar (below Export PDF)
    • The Start Batch from Recipe button in the bottom action bar (below the calculator tabs)

All three open the same start dialog with your current calculator recipe pre-filled. Confirm batch name, process type, made date, expected bars, mold, cure days, and whether to create default email reminders.

    Batch dashboard overview

    Active batches

    Premium
Quick count and cards for batches currently in production—unmolding, curing, ready to package, and similar stages.

    Upcoming actions

    Premium
Scheduled unmold, cut, cure check, and cure completion reminders based on dates you set or accept when starting the batch.

    Recently completed

    Premium
Batches marked Completed Batch for quick reference on the dashboard.

    Batch issues / flags

    Premium
Batches with recorded production flags such as acceleration, ricing, or other issues logged in batch notes.

    Production timeline

Each batch moves through stages: Planned → Made → In Mold → Unmolded → Cut → Curing → Ready to Package → Ready → Completed Batch. Use Advance to next stage in the batch detail panel, or set status manually. Suggested milestone dates are calculated when you start a batch and can be edited at any time.

    When a batch is completed

Marking a batch Completed Batch means production is finished. It then appears on the Dashboard Completed Batches tab. Completed Batch does not automatically add bars to inventory—you choose when to do that.

Open the completed batch and click Add to Inventory. SoapMetrics copies the finished bars into Inventory → Completed Bars, using the batch number, recipe name, bar count, and photos from the batch record. If that batch is already in Completed Bars, SoapMetrics tells you instead of creating a duplicate.

    Batch detail tabs

    Overview
Batch name, status, dates, linked recipe snapshot summary, mold, bar counts, and milestone schedule.
    Production
Actual batch notes—temperatures, trace, mixing time, fragrance/additives used, and issue flags (acceleration, ricing, seizing, soda ash, cracking, and more).
    Cure
Cure progress bar (for example, Day 12 of 42), cure log entries with bar weight and observations during cure.
    Quality
End-of-batch scorecard: appearance, scent, hardness, lather, conditioning, longevity, color, overall rating, and whether you would make the exact formula again. Create Revised Recipe loads a copy into the calculator without altering the saved batch snapshot.
    Photos
Store multiple batch photos (after pour, unmold, cut, cure, finished bar) as reference URLs or notes.
    Business
Optional supplier/lot tracking, batch and per-bar cost, packaging, and sales counts for makers who sell soap.
    Inventory Ingredients
Optional accordion on the batch: match recipe oils and additives to inventory items, then confirm to deduct stock. Opening the section does not change quantities. You can return previously deducted amounts if needed. Portions you mark as manual are not taken from inventory.

    Email reminders

When starting a batch, you can enable default reminders for unmolding, cure check, and cure completion. Reminders are sent to the email on your SoapMetrics account. Override any scheduled date in the batch detail Overview tab.

    Recipe snapshots protect your records

Batch #SM-2026-004 always shows the exact oils, lye, water, and additives from the day you clicked Start Batch—even if you revise the parent recipe months later.
    16

    Completed Batches

    Premium records of finished production.

    Premium
Open Dashboard → Completed Batches to review batches that have reached Completed Batch status. This is a production history list—not the same as Inventory. A completed batch can exist here before any bars are added to inventory.

    What you can review

    Premium
Open a completed batch to see the locked recipe snapshot, dates, notes, cure log, quality scorecard, photos, and business fields from the day you made it.

    Create Revised Recipe

    Premium
Clone the snapshot back into the calculator under a new name. The original completed batch does not change.

    Moving finished bars into inventory

    1. 1Finish production and advance the batch to Completed Batch.
    2. 2Open the batch from Batch Tracking or from Dashboard → Completed Batches.
    3. 3Click Add to Inventory on the batch status card.
    4. 4SoapMetrics creates an Inventory → Completed Bars record with the batch number, recipe name, bar quantity, and photos.
    5. 5Later, open that Completed Bars row to lower quantity when bars are sold or given away, add photos, or archive the record.

    Completed Batch vs Completed Bars

Completed Batches is the production record. Completed Bars is stock of finished soap. Add to Inventory is the bridge between them. Inventory quantities only change when you add bars or edit the quantity on hand.
    17

    Inventory

Premium tracking for ingredients, supplies, molds, suppliers, and finished bars.

    Premium
Open Dashboard → Inventory to keep oils, additives, packing supplies, molds, suppliers, and finished bars in one workspace. Summary cards show total items, low stock, out of stock, expiring soon, estimated total value, and active molds.

Inventory is a ledger you maintain. SoapMetrics does not see your shelf. Update quantities when you receive a shipment, restock, apply ingredients to a batch, or sell finished bars.

    Inventory tabs

    Ingredients
Oils, butters, additives, and similar materials. Add items with quantity, unit, optional cost, supplier, and low-stock settings. Use Restock to add incoming stock. Archive hides an item from the active list without deleting history.

Packaging and other production supplies tracked the same way as ingredients.
    Molds
Loaf, cavity, and slab molds with optional dimensions, cavity count, number owned, and preferred fill weight. Archived molds are hidden from the active list.
    Suppliers
Vendor records you can attach to inventory items, with optional export of the supplier list.
    Completed Bars
Finished soap added from a Completed Batch. Search by name, batch number, or recipe. Click a row to edit quantity on hand, add a reason (for example sold at market), manage photos, or archive.
    Stock Activity
History of restocks, adjustments, batch usage, supplier changes, and completed-bar quantity updates.

    Using inventory with a batch

On a batch, open Inventory Ingredients to match calculator oils and additives to inventory items. Confirm before anything is deducted. If a recipe amount is larger than stock, you can take what you have from inventory and treat the rest as a manual portion. Return Ingredients to Inventory puts previously deducted amounts back.

    Check stock before you pour

Inventory is meant to be reviewed before you scale a recipe or start a batch. It does not automatically block a batch if an oil is low or missing.

    Version your recipes

When testing changes, save or export a new version rather than overwriting a proven formula.

    Reviewing saved ingredient data

Older saved or imported recipes may preserve chemistry from when they were last saved. SoapMetrics does not silently overwrite that data when catalog definitions improve.

    Update ingredient information
When saved chemistry differs from the current catalog, an informational card lists the affected ingredients. Click Review update to see what may change. Proposed lye appears only when the adopted values validate.
    Update and recalculate
Confirms adoption of current ingredient data and recalculates lye. Your oil amounts, percentages, and other recipe settings stay the same unless you edit them.
    Not now
Keeps the saved chemistry for now. Lye may stay withheld until you review the update. Exports and batch actions that require current calculations may ask you to resolve the prompt first.
    Unresolved variants
Parent-selector rows still need an explicit variant choice. Adoption does not pick Sweet vs Sour Cherry or similar grades for you—resolve Choose variant before relying on calculations or exports.

    Important

Not every legacy recipe updates automatically. Review proposed changes before recalculating, especially when lye amounts change.
    19

    Soap Quality Metrics

    What the numbers mean.

Metrics use the applicable documented model for each ingredient in your blend. Reference ranges help compare to common formulation targets—they are guidelines, not pass/fail rules.

Some ingredients contribute to lye calculations but do not have a usable model for every soap-quality estimate. “Based on 90% of ingredient weight” means that estimate uses the supported 90% of your recipe. For example, a blend of 90% olive oil and 10% pine tar can include both ingredients in its lye calculation while using the olive portion for conventional quality estimates. The excluded portion is not treated as zero. Select ? or Why? for more information.

Coverage can differ between metrics. An ingredient may support fatty-acid estimates but lack iodine/INS, or support iodine/INS without conventional bar-quality scores. N/A means that estimate is unavailable, not zero. Composition marked unclassified is separate from estimate coverage; it does not mean ingredient weight disappeared.

    Hardness
Estimates contribution to a firm, durable bar.
    Cleansing
Reflects fatty acids associated with stronger oil-removing properties.
    Conditioning
Estimates oils associated with a milder, more conditioning feel.
    Bubbly Lather
Estimates tendency toward larger, more active bubbles.
    Creamy Lather
Estimates dense, stable, creamy lather characteristics.
    Longevity
Composition proxy from palmitic + stearic (equivalently hardness minus cleansing). It is a formulation indicator, not a measured wear test.
    Stability
Custom composition-based stability indicator derived from iodine, linoleic, and linolenic in your blend. It is a formulation proxy—not a measured shelf-life test or lather persistence measurement.
    Iodine
Traditional value related to unsaturation in the oil blend.
    INS
Traditional index from SAP and iodine-related values. Use as a reference, not a pass/fail score.
    20

    Fatty Acid Profile

Weighted composition of your oil blend.

SoapMetrics combines each ingredient's documented fatty acids proportionally by recipe percentage when that ingredient supports fatty-acid estimates. Ingredients without a fatty-acid model are excluded from this chart—not counted as zero acids. Coverage can differ from iodine, INS, or bar-quality metrics; select ? or Why? beside related captions for details.

    Lauric
    Hardness, cleansing and bubbly lather.
    Myristic
    Hardness, cleansing and lather contribution.
    Palmitic
    Hardness, longevity and creamy lather.
    Stearic
Hardness, longevity and dense creamy lather.
    Ricinoleic
Lather support and stability; strongly associated with castor oil.
    Oleic
Conditioning character and milder skin feel.
    Linoleic
Conditioning and skin feel; highly unsaturated.
    Linolenic
Conditioning and skin feel; more oxidation-prone at higher levels.

    Understanding Warnings

What alerts mean—and what they do not mean.

SoapMetrics may show messages when values fall outside common ranges or deserve attention:

    Information
Something worth knowing; review if curious.
    Caution / Warning
Review the setting before making the recipe.
    Special Ingredient Notifications
Ingredient-based process alerts (Premium details). They explain handling changes and do not alter lye calculations.
    Estimate coverage
Model-coverage notes explain which portion of your recipe supports a given estimate. They are separate from process alerts and from formula-balance Soap Tips.
    Error
A structural issue such as oil percentages not totaling 100%.

Soap Tips and Analyze Recipe fixes

    Premium
On the Soap Analysis tab, open Soap Tips and expand Analyze Recipe to review formula-balance suggestions. Tips with a Fix button open a preview of proposed oil changes.

    Fix preview
Shows how selected oil amounts or percentages would change before anything is applied. Review the previewed totals—especially oil percentages—before confirming.
    Apply Verified Fix
Available when the targeted calculator rule clears after the previewed change. “Verified” means the specific SoapMetrics guideline for that tip is satisfied—not laboratory validation or a guarantee the recipe is ideal for your process.
    Apply Change / Apply Improvement
Applies a previewed adjustment that improves the formula but may not fully clear the guideline, or involves a tradeoff between metrics.
    Cancel
Closes the fix dialog without changing the recipe. Partial estimate coverage does not drive unsupported whole-recipe fixes—only tips with an applicable Fix path can be applied.

    Important

A warning does not automatically mean a recipe is invalid. The absence of warnings does not guarantee a recipe is appropriate or safe. Unusual formulations may be intentional.

    Full Recipe Instructions

    Premium step-by-step making guide.

    Premium
Full Recipe Instructions converts your completed recipe into organized, process-specific directions—including PPE, lye solution prep, oil melting, trace, HP cook stages, additive timing, Special Ingredient Instructions, molding, and cure.

When the recipe includes special items such as salt, vinegar, honey, milk, or clay, the document adds a notice at the top and places the handling in the correct step (for example, salt last, or clay pre-dispersed). The document uses calculated lye, water, and ingredient amounts from SoapMetrics—not invented values.

    Verify instructions before beginning

Instructions are supplemental guidance generated from the recipe data you entered. They do not replace supplier SDS documents, soap-making training, or your own verification. If anything conflicts with the calculator totals, stop and resolve the discrepancy before proceeding.

    Common Questions

Do I need to enter both weight and percent for each oil?

No. Enter weight or percent for each row—SoapMetrics updates the other from Scale Recipe (total oil weight). Percentages should total 100% when building by percentage.

Do my oil percentages need to equal 100%?

Yes, when building by percentage. SoapMetrics shows the running total below the oil list. Use Normalize Recipe to adjust proportionally if needed.

Why do some ingredients show Choose variant?

Some catalog entries are parent selectors—for example Cherry Sweet vs Sour, Coffee Green vs Roasted, or whole coconut vs MCT. Pick the specific grade you use. A parent row is a selector, not a separate measured oil.

What does Based on X% of ingredient weight mean?

Some ingredients support lye but not every quality estimate. That caption means the estimate uses the supported portion of your recipe—the excluded portion is not treated as zero. Select ? or Why? for details. Coverage can differ between metrics; N/A means unavailable, not zero.

Why does an older saved recipe ask me to review ingredient information?

SoapMetrics preserves saved chemistry until you confirm an update. Click Review update to see proposed changes, then Update and recalculate or Not now. Lye recalculates only after you confirm. Unresolved Choose variant rows may still need attention before calculations and exports.

Is a recipe bad if a quality metric is outside the suggested range?

Not necessarily. Ranges are reference guidelines. Specialty recipes may intentionally fall outside common targets.

Why did my lye amount change when I changed oils?

Different oils have different SAP values. Changing the blend changes the weighted alkali requirement.

What's the difference between Export PDF and Full Recipe Instructions?

Export PDF is a complete recipe and analysis document with charts and tables. Full Recipe Instructions (Premium) is a step-by-step making guide focused on safely executing the batch.

    What are Special Ingredient Instructions?

When a recipe includes items that can change how soap behaves—such as salt, vinegar, honey, milk, clay, charcoal, or certain fragrances—SoapMetrics can show notices and handling guidance. Premium unlocks the full alerts in Soap Tips, plus the matching details and step placement on PDF exports and Full Recipe Instructions.

Can I share recipes with others?

Export Recipe as JSON and send the file. The recipient can Import Recipe on their SoapMetrics calculator.

    What does Compliance Check verify?

It reviews your calculator recipe against selected criteria (vegan, palm-free, fragrance-free, specialty styles, etc.) and flags likely conflicts. It does not replace supplier verification or official certification.

How does the Soap Cost Calculator work?

Premium Soap Cost Calculator imports oils, lye, fragrance, additives, colorants, and toppings that have quantities from your current recipe. Enter purchased quantity, unit, and price paid for each item. SoapMetrics calculates what this recipe consumed, plus optional extras such as labels or wrapping, then divides by actual bars produced for invested cost per bar. Distilled water is excluded unless you choose to include it. This worksheet is separate from Inventory.

    What is Ask SoapMetrics?

Ask SoapMetrics is Premium recipe-aware AI help for the formula currently loaded in the Soap Calculator. Open the Ask SoapMetrics tab to ask about trace, lather, softness, additives, or formulation. It does not recalculate lye for you. AI can make mistakes—always double-check answers, units, and safety before making soap. See the Ask SoapMetrics page for the full disclaimer.

Will editing a saved recipe change my old batch records?

No. Batch Tracking stores a recipe snapshot when you start a batch. Later edits to the parent recipe in the calculator or Dashboard do not alter completed batch history.

How do batch email reminders work?

When you start a batch with reminders enabled, SoapMetrics schedules unmold, cure check, and cure completion alerts based on your dates. Reminders go to your account email; you can adjust dates in each batch's Overview tab.

Where do I find completed batches?

Dashboard → Completed Batches lists batches that have reached Completed Batch status. You can also see recently completed batches on the Batch Tracking overview.

How do I add finished soap to inventory?

Open a Completed Batch and click Add to Inventory. That creates a Completed Bars record under Dashboard → Inventory. Quantity starts from the batch bar count. Lower the quantity later when bars leave your shelf. Adding the same batch twice does not create a duplicate.

Does completing a batch automatically update inventory?

No. Completing a batch only moves it into Completed Batches. Ingredient deductions happen when you confirm Inventory Ingredients on the batch. Finished bars are added only when you click Add to Inventory.

    Ready to build a recipe?

Open the calculator and work through each section from top to bottom. Metrics and totals update as you go.
